Based upon the sound plans my colleagues and I have pushed for over the past several years, our school district has distinguished itself in the following ways:
- 23 of our schools are recognized as California Distinguish Schools and 9 have been named as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
- U.S. News and World Report awarded 2 of our high schools with silver medals and 2 with bronze in their nationwide ranking of over 21,000 high schools.
- Our district's Academic Performance Index (API) has grown from 734 to 818.
- We are one of the few districts in the state that has not had to lay off any teachers despite budget cuts, while maintaining class size reduction in grades K-3.
- Conducted a Health Insurance Enrollment Audit that resulted in a savings of over $300,000 annually.
- Re-structured workers compensation program resulting in a better
managed and effective program with an annual savings of $2.4 million.
- Eliminated the leasing of outside facilities for the Verdugo
Academy and the Food Service Program by utilizing district owned facilities. This resulted in an annual savings of $150,000.
- Over the course of two years, actively working with Energy
Education, the District has avoided over $2.6 million in energy/
utility related costs. Also, because of the program, a more solid bond
has been formed between Glendale Water and Power and the District.
This closer relationship has resulted in over $140,000 of funding from the City and the promise of inclusion in other GWP savings programs.
- Actively pursued additional State funding for facility projects
resulting in over $10 million in additional State funding for GUSD construction projects.

In addition, I personally played an integral role in the formation of the Glendale Education Foundation, which has provided much needed private funding to continue vital school programs.
I continue to work hard on every important issue before the School Board, because I know that it directly affects the quality of education our children receive. |
